English as an Additional Language

On arrival at Le Régent, all students joining G10 and below will receive an English proficiency assessment to ensure that their EAL needs are identified and then met.

To ensure that students are fully supported in Academic English acquisition, Le Régent adopts a tiered approach. EAL Students receive one of three levels of support depending on their English ability, which is assessed by their grade and initial testing. Programme allocations are made by the EAL Coordinator and the Director of  Academics.

Throughout the year, students’ progress is regularly monitored, enabling them to move tiers as their English level progresses.

Grades 6–8 Grades 9–10
Tier 1 Provision: 5 small-group periods per week
  • Students attend parallel EAL groups during English lesson time.
  • Students work in small groups at an appropriate level through lessons delivered by a specialist EAL teacher.
  • Students can access learning in all other lessons with appropriate teacher support.
Tier 2 Provision: 5 small-group periods per week + 2 or 3 additional group periods per week 5 small-group periods per week + 4 additional group periods per week
In addition to the EAL class, students attend additional EAL support lessons instead of the 3rd language block. In addition to the EAL class, students attend EAL support lessons instead of French. The increased provision allows for accelerated progress in English during the critical Pre-IB years.
Tier 3 Provision: Determined by the student's level of English and age
The number of lessons is agreed at the admissions stage to ensure appropriate support is given. The student receives a tailor-made EAL programme through EAL classes and additional private EAL tuition instead of some academic subjects, maximising English progression.

Once a certain level of English has been achieved, students will be entered for Cambridge English exams (KET, PET, and First Certificate for schools). To support students' demonstration of language proficiency for University applications, all IB1 students are provided with the opportunity to complete their IELTS examination.

The Head of EAL will continually monitor the progress and success of students within their assigned groups. Flexibility is given to ensure the appropriate level of support for the student to maximise their potential progress. Students will move into the mainstream English programme once they have reached B1 level English (G1 - 5) or B2 level English (G6-10). Any concerns relating to students' progress and their level of English proficiency can always be referred back to the Head of EAL.

Entry into G10 requires B1 level English and entry into the IB requires B2.
