Ages 11 – 13

Middle Years Programme

In Grades 6 to 8, the academic programme is built on the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC), ensuring a clear transition from the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) followed in the Junior School.

A Connected Learning Journey

The thematic approach of the IMYC allows learning across subjects to become more connected and meaningful. Students develop knowledge, skills and understanding across disciplines while gaining a broader awareness of the world around them. The programme encourages students to become increasingly internationally minded, learning about different cultures while developing strong multilingual abilities.

All subjects are taught by specialist teachers, and languages are taught by native speakers, ensuring a high level of academic and linguistic development.

Core Curriculum

Students follow a broad and balanced curriculum including:

French
Spanish, German or Italian as a second language
Mathematics
General Sciences
Innovation & Technology
History and Geography
Music, Visual Arts, Theatre & Performance
World Language Arts
Sport & Physical Education, including skiing in winter
Citizenship

Additional Support and Enrichment

Private or small group lessons are available for LAMDA, additional English support, mother-tongue languages and academic support.

Le Régent Pre-IB Programme

The Pre-IB Programme provides students with the academic foundations and learning skills required to progress successfully to the IB Diploma Programme.

Preparing for the IB Diploma Programme

This two-year programme offers a clear progression from Grade 9 to Grade 10, gradually introducing the rigour and independence expected in the IB. Grade 10 may also be taken as a stand-alone entry year for students joining Le Régent before starting the IB Diploma Programme.

Compared with the Middle Years Programme, the curriculum becomes more rigorous and detailed, with greater emphasis on academic independence and regular progress monitoring. The objective is to help students develop effective study habits and take ownership of their learning.

Core Curriculum

Mathematics, English and French remain central subjects, with classes adapted to students’ abilities in order to maximise both support and challenge.

In Grade 9, students are introduced to Global Societies, a key humanities subject that explores political systems, economic development, technology and society. This subject provides an excellent foundation for IB Individuals and Societies subjects.

Languages and Bilingualism

Bilingualism is a central part of the Le Régent curriculum. All students study a minimum of two languages, with French remaining compulsory for most students unless additional English support is required.

Students are also encouraged to develop their first language through mother-tongue language programmes, which may include Mandarin, Turkish, Russian, Italian and others.

Sciences

In Grade 9, students study Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science separately with specialist teachers.

In Grade 10, students begin shaping a more personalised academic pathway by selecting three sciences aligned with their interests and ambitions. Students select three sciences from Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Science or Environmental Science.

Humanities and Arts

Humanities and the Arts remain an important part of the curriculum.

In Grade 9, students select three subjects from:

History
Geography
Music
Design Technology Innovation
Theatre
Visual Arts

Students must choose at least one Humanities and one Arts subject.

In Grade 10, students narrow their focus and select two subjects, again including one Humanities and one Arts subject.

Preparing for the IB Core

Alongside their academic studies, students participate in lessons introducing key aspects of the IB approach, including Citizenship, Critical Thinking and Ethics, Service Leadership and University Guidance.

IB1 & IB2

The IB Diploma Programme is a holistic and academically rigorous course of study recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide.

The IB Diploma at Le Régent

The IB Diploma Programme encourages students to develop strong academic knowledge while cultivating the intellectual curiosity, independence and resilience required for life beyond school.

International mindedness lies at the heart of the programme and reflects Le Régent’s approach to education. Students are encouraged to think critically, engage with global perspectives and develop a deep understanding of different cultures and ideas.

Academic Structure

The IB Diploma is characterised by its broad and balanced curriculum. Students study six subjects selected from the IB subject groups, choosing three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level.

Alongside their academic subjects, students complete three core components that form an essential part of the IB philosophy:

The Extended Essay, an independent research project of up to 4,000 words on a topic of the student’s choice.
Theory of Knowledge, a course that encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we understand the world.
Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), through which students participate in and reflect on artistic, sporting and service activities beyond the classroom.

Together, these elements encourage students to become thoughtful, reflective and engaged learners, prepared for the challenges of university and the wider world.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The holistic nature of the IB Diploma is complemented by Le Régent’s co-curricular and outdoor education programme. Set in the heart of the Swiss Alps, students benefit from exceptional opportunities to engage in sport, outdoor exploration and leadership experiences throughout the year.

Across all four seasons, these experiences allow students to challenge themselves, develop new skills and make the most of their time in a unique alpine environment.

Le Régent Graduation Diploma

Alongside the IB Diploma Programme, Le Régent also offers students the possibility to complete the Le Régent Graduation Diploma.

This parallel pathway may be suitable for students who wish to pursue a more specialised academic focus while continuing to benefit from the school’s rigorous and supportive learning environment.

English as an Additional Language

On arrival at Le Régent, all students joining G10 and below will receive an English proficiency assessment to ensure that their EAL needs are identified and then met.

To ensure that students are fully supported in Academic English acquisition, Le Régent adopts a tiered approach. EAL Students receive one of three levels of support depending on their English ability, which is assessed by their grade and initial testing. Programme allocations are made by the EAL Coordinator and the Director of  Academics.

Throughout the year, students’ progress is regularly monitored, enabling them to move tiers as their English level progresses.

Grades 6–8 Grades 9–10
Tier 1 Provision: 5 small-group periods per week
  • Students attend parallel EAL groups during English lesson time.
  • Students work in small groups at an appropriate level through lessons delivered by a specialist EAL teacher.
  • Students can access learning in all other lessons with appropriate teacher support.
Tier 2 Provision: 5 small-group periods per week + 2 or 3 additional group periods per week 5 small-group periods per week + 4 additional group periods per week
In addition to the EAL class, students attend additional EAL support lessons instead of the 3rd language block. In addition to the EAL class, students attend EAL support lessons instead of French. The increased provision allows for accelerated progress in English during the critical Pre-IB years.
Tier 3 Provision: Determined by the student's level of English and age
The number of lessons is agreed at the admissions stage to ensure appropriate support is given. The student receives a tailor-made EAL programme through EAL classes and additional private EAL tuition instead of some academic subjects, maximising English progression.

Once a certain level of English has been achieved, students will be entered for Cambridge English exams (KET, PET, and First Certificate for schools). To support students' demonstration of language proficiency for University applications, all IB1 students are provided with the opportunity to complete their IELTS examination.

The Head of EAL will continually monitor the progress and success of students within their assigned groups. Flexibility is given to ensure the appropriate level of support for the student to maximise their potential progress. Students will move into the mainstream English programme once they have reached B1 level English (G1 - 5) or B2 level English (G6-10). Any concerns relating to students' progress and their level of English proficiency can always be referred back to the Head of EAL.

Entry into G10 requires B1 level English and entry into the IB requires B2.
